Romancing the airwaves

I think the glowing ON-AIR light is the same everywhere in the world.

I stepped back in time a little this week – back to my days as a journalist when I was doing radio news reports. But this time – I was on the other side of the microphone.

Some of my writer chums and I went over to Radio Marlow FM to talk about writing romantic fiction – as a precursor to next Sunday – which I don’t have to tell anyone is Valentines Day.

It was great to spend the whole show talking about writing. Thank you Vanessa and Chrissie and Clare – who were so welcoming and got us thinking and talking about what we do.

I was thinking afterwards how little has changed – and how much has changed about radio.

When TV was first becoming popular – ‘they’ (whoever ‘they’ are) said radio would die. But it didn’t. All these years later it’s still with us and still relevant.

It’s still a wonderful place to talk in depth about some interesting topic. A place of new ideas, and humour. It somehow seems more real than a lot of Television – it’s not rehearsed or scripted. There’s no makeup or costume to hide behind. There we were – just us – being ourselves.

Where technology has changed radio is that it’s made these discussions less transient. Radio Marlow FM makes all its shows available to listen to online, or even download. Go here to listen to what we were saying about heroes and falling in love and writing books.

We had a lot of fun – I hope the listeners did too.

And the day has made me think more about radio– I should definitely listen to it more often. Time to unplug my MP3 player from the car stereo and hit the FM button instead.
