The earthquake was devastating for the people of Haiti<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

Not long ago, I shared a plane journey with a woman who was heading to Haiti to continue charity work with the victims of the terrible earthquake in 2010.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of thousands of people were killed or left homeless by the earthquake.<\/p>\n

At the time the world rallied to offer aid – but these things fade from the public view quickly. For the people of Haiti \u2013 the recovery is long and hard.<\/p>\n

On my plane, I met a woman from THEA <\/a>\u00a0an organization helping the Haitian people help themselves \u2013 mainly through education.<\/p>\n

It was once of those chance meetings that can sometimes lead to something more.<\/p>\n

The relief effort was massive - but the recovery is taking a long time<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

This weekend, in New York, THEA is holding a fundraising event \u2013 and\u00a0one of the items in\u00a0their silent auction will be the name of one of the characters in the novel I am currently writing. I will name the character after the highest bidder.<\/p>\n

It is a strange way to name a character.<\/p>\n

Usually the naming process requires a lot of flicking through my baby name books. I\u00a0will try several different names until I find the one which\u00a0suits my character.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It will be interesting to see how I go writing a character using a name I am given \u2013 rather than one I choose.<\/p>\n

So \u2013 an interesting test of writing for me \u2013 and a chance to do something for a good cause\u2026<\/p>\n

I just hope the person who makes the winning bid is not called Algernon Zowie Snodgrass \u2013 because that name is just not going to work in my book!<\/p>\n
