Some of the shortlisted books<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Being a writer involves a lot of sitting at a computer in a small room talking to imaginary people in our heads.<\/p>\n

But every now and then, we get let out.<\/p>\n

This week was THE most glamorous event on my social calendar\u2026 the Romantic Novel of the Year Awards.<\/p>\n

But glamour isn\u2019t easy \u2013 for some us, the awards night is a lot of hard work.<\/p>\n

There is a team of people who organise the awards \u2013 collecting the nominated books, sending them to the readers \u2013 then collating the scores and doing the maths to find out who is the winner. With my maths skills, I\u2019m not allowed anywhere near that \u2013 and rightly so.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a lot of hard work going into making something so smooth and sparkly. I am but a small cog in a very hard working machine.<\/p>\n

Being a bit of a geek, my job is the technology \u2013 specifically the display on the big screen as the shortlists are presented and the winners announced.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a lot of work involved in collecting and processing the images\u2026\u00a0 not to mention checking and double checking that I spelled everyone\u2019s name right.<\/p>\n

That keeps me busy for several weeks before the event.<\/p>\n

On the night, I\u2019m part of the team that gets there early \u2013 organising photos, laying out books, checking the table decorations \u2013 and triple checking that my spelling on the slides is correct.<\/p>\n

The end result was just wonderful\u2026.<\/p>\n

OK \u2013 some of those\u00a0photos were from the RNA\u2019s official photo shoot \u2013 because I was so busy doing my bit, I didn\u2019t have time to take any myself once the event got underway.<\/p>\n

The winners were all wonderful \u2013 and deserve all the praise they get\u2026 but so too does the team that helped put this together \u2013 you are all stars \u2013 each and every one of you. Take a bow.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
