Fine spring evenings are wonderful. And they are even better when you can spend it in one of your favourite places.<\/p>\n

For me this week that was Cecil Court in the centre of London. Cecil Court is a lovely old street, now a pedestrian way, filled with lovely old shops selling books \u2013 old and new, old maps and art and no end of interesting \u2018stuff\u2019.<\/p>\n

My favourite shop in this favourite street is Goldsboro Books \u2013 where I have spent far too much money on several occasions.<\/p>\n

And this week, it was my honour to be invited to be part of their annual \u2018Romance in the Court\u2019 evening.<\/p>\n

This is a gathering to celebrate romantic fiction in all its forms \u2013 from grand historical works to chic lit and fantasy and women\u2019s fiction.<\/p>\n

What a wonderful display of romantic fiction – and my book was right in the middle – on the shelves of my favourite book shop.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

There was a real party mood as authors mingled with bloggers and readers and even a few passers-by who stopped to see what all the fun was about.<\/p>\n

One lovely reader had prepared an album, to collect signatures of all the authors. She comes every year to do this. How fabulous.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

As writers we spend a lot of time alone at our desks talking to imaginary people who live only in our heads \u2013 at least that\u2019s how it seems. It is such a thrill to talk to people who have met those characters \u2013 people to whom Tia and Max and Trish and all the rest seem as real as they do to me.<\/p>\n

Signing books is without a doubt my favourite thing.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

So now I\u2019m back at my desk talking to a new set of imaginary people. I really can\u2019t wait to introduce them to my \u2018real\u2019 friends. But it\u2019s going to be a little while yet.<\/p>\n

The thing about writing a book is that it\u2019s hard work and takes a long time. It\u2019s lovely to have an evening off to enjoy the results of that work.<\/p>\n
