The things you learn on boats

Rivers come with maps - just as hard to read as road maps.

It’s November. It’s getting cold. The sky is low and grey and yesterday we had hail.

I was sitting at my desk, going through some photographs – and I stumbled across just the thing to brighten a dull day. I thought I would share.

The last couple of years, we’ve escaped every summer for a few days … as Rat would say … simply mucking about in boats. Our most recent excursion was along the Thames, when it was still warm and sunny.

I have decided one of the best things about boating is the unique angle it gives to everyday life.

So, let me share some things I learned while boating…

In South-East England, everyone gets aircraft noise.

A lot of Thames-side homes are very nice...
A Thames-side home looks like a nice place to live…
But not all them are mansions.
But not all them are mansions.
Sometimes old is beautiful.
Sometimes old is beautiful.
But you don't have to get married in an old church.

There are times when even swans look inelegant.

The Rocky Horror House is real.
The Rocky Horror House is real.
On the river, you can listen to the festival music in comfort - with a shower and toilet.

And night on the river is beautiful.
And night on the river is beautiful.

Wow! I just loved your photos – especially the last one. I once had a. Easter holiday on a narrow boat in the Midlands. What I particularly loved was the way that it forced you to slow down mentally. You are only travelling at a few miles per hour and, inevitably, you start to relax and notice things – like lambs gambolling and flowers and horses. It was quite a shock to go under the motorway!

I could very easily develop a really liking for pottering around rivers and canals. As you say, very restful and it does help you see things that flash by too fast in daily life.
